Election Results & Conference Updates
Dear ISSRNC Friends and Colleagues,
Here’s what’s happening with the ISSRNC.
Election Results:
Your votes are in and your new board members are:
Treasurer: Elaine Nogueira-Godsey
At-large members: Gina Drew, Jenny Butler, Lisa Sideris, Dan Smyer Yu
Student representative: Norah Elmagraby
The new board members bring the kind of varied experiences that will provide fresh insights and opportunities for the future of the ISSRNC. We couldn’t be in better hands.
I’d like to take a moment to thank our departing board members: Kristina Tiedje, Whitney Bauman, David Haberman, Emma Tomalin, and the amazing (newly minted PhD) Chris Crews who as student member was a primary organizer for the Mountains and Sacred Landscapes conference and who has been overseeing web operations. Their contributions to strategic planning, conference organizing, and sustaining the spirit of our Society have been invaluable.
Conference Updates:
The ISSRNC Lifetime Achievement Award: The ISSRNC Board is very pleased to announce that Mary Evelyn Tucker and John A. Grim have been selected as the 2019 recipients of the ISSRNC’s Lifetime Achievement Award for their outstanding contributions to the study of religion, nature, and culture. The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes distinguished figures whose work has a relevance and eloquence that speaks, not just to scholars, but more broadly to the public and to multiple disciplines. For full details about the award and our recipients’ remarkable careers, please follow this link to the website.
There is still time to apply for the ISSRNC Best Student Conference Paper Award. Students presenting at the 2019 Cork Conference are invited to submit their conference paper (or a longer version, not to exceed 5,000 words) to be considered for the Award for the Best Student Conference Paper. Both in-person and online student presentations are eligible for the award. Details of the competition are here.
A draft of the conference schedule is now up on the website. You can find it here after logging in.
Time limitations. We decided to limit the number of concurrent sessions to 3 or 4 since we have found in the past that fewer concurrent sessions create more opportunities for conference participants to interact. This encourages the unexpected and fortuitous conversations that make these meetings so valuable and fun. While this arrangement shortens the time available for presenting (you should expect to limit your presentation to about 10-15 minutes) we’d like to encourage everyone to post their papers to the website in advance of the conference. We’re working out the details and will have something available early next week.
Closing date for registration – May 31, 2019. The staff on the ground at UCC Cork will need a head count for some of the events so we plan to close registration on May 31st so they’ll have time to work out the logistics. Please get registered as soon as possible!
Conference accommodations: A quick reminder to attend to your lodging as soon as possible. Options are available here.
On behalf of your ISSRNC Board, my very best wishes. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in Cork!
Yours,
Mark
