Women’s Participation in Food Justice – Public Lecture (Video)
We are excited to share video of a recent public talk by two ISSRNC board members, Elaine Nogueira-Godsey and Kelsey Ryan-Simkins, on the topic of gender and food justice. In their lecture, “Women’s Participation in Food Justice: Developing Transnational Solidarity,” MTSO Assistant Professor of Theology, Ecology and Race Elaine Nogueira-Godsey and Ohio State University doctoral student Kelsey Ryan-Simkins discuss examples of North America solidarity around issues of gender and food injustice.
This lecture is about the key roles that women involved in sustainable agriculture play by resisting the current dominant global food system and promoting an alternative to this system. The dominant global food system is characterized by large-scale industrial agriculture and enforced worldwide by the policies of the United States and other developed nations. It has been criticized for contributing to soil erosion, nutrient depletion, pollution, decreased biodiversity and for harming the wellbeing of rural communities across the Earth. In our research we demonstrate how women’s participation in food justice projects offers an example of tangible action for those in North America who wish to live in solidarity with those struggling with food injustice in both developed and developing countries.
We’ll also be doing an interview soon with Elaine and Kelsey on this same topic, so stay tuned for more from both of them! In the meantime, enjoy the video.
